Unbelievable crash
Not all that interesting to several on here but there’s just been an absolutely unbelievable crash in the F1 race. A miracle Romain Grosjean hasn’t died and actually walked away from it under his own power. Car pierced a metal barrier, split in half and was engulfed in a huge fireball for 30 seconds.

I’m sure footage is available. But fuck me it’s extraordinary.

It is- so that definitely didn't happen as it should have- probably just due to the unique forces involved.

Definitely there will be some questions to answer there! They'll get a lot of answers from all the camera angles they probably have of the incident that weren't broadcast

Re: Unbelievable crash
I thought the car was designed to separate in such as way as the engine would stay with the rear of the car instead of the cockpit?

Training and formal qualifications of marshalls

Except for the one yesterday who ignored the Green Cross Code to get to Perez's car when that caught fire yesterday and nearly got collected by Lando Norris.

Oh god, it was pitiful driving.

Even DC said he was obviously glad he was OK but then said its hard to have sympathy for a driver when they are doing stuff like that.

Rumour going about that one of the barriers arms had been removed to fit a camera. Not sure how true this is.

They said the barriers did their job by cushioning the impact and holding the car rather than it bouncing off and going anywhere else.

If the barrier was compromised to house a camera god help the person that authorised it.

Grosjean was completely responsible for that horrorshow with a terrible piece of very careless driving.

Completely! Before they were made of such tough carbon fiber, the car disintegrates completely and he's probably in 20 pieces or at the very least with no legs, amongst twisted metal. It's remarkable how it stayed completely intact.

Re: Unbelievable crash
And thanks to all the safety and learning from tragedy, a crash like RP's is completely run of the mill survivable these days. It's sad that all the safety measures were not there at the time to save him and Gilles, and the likes of Senna and Bianchi, but through those and other tragedies they learn and put into practice ways to make it as safe as possible.

Actually if anyone's interested, there's a great book about historical safety in F1 written by Sid Watkins who was the doctor who helped put a lot of it in place. 'Life at the Limit: Triumph and Tragedy in Formula One'. Totally recommend it.

Thanks MPI and the below guys. I used to be a big fan when I was a kid but when my favourite driver Ronnie Petersen was killed I stopped watching really.

Exactly. Before 2018 he doesn't survive that. He's dead from a catastrophic head injury. The halo may be ugly but it's directly saved his life there- AND it stayed intact through all that impact. Incredible. This is exactly what it was designed for.

The HANS device will have stopped any skull or neck fractures which have killed many drivers from a sudden shock of going from very fast to zero in a fraction- hence it's introduction.

Not to mention all the other innovations you listed below which combined yesterday. Without most or all of them, there's a wife and three kids without a husband and a dad today.

Although to be fair, the barriers did not work as they should have done today and actually made this one way worse and into a freakishly bad accident, but the safety as it is, they'll have new solutions implemented in double quick time. I can see them maybe overlapping the strips of metal on those barriers like scales on a reptile so there's no gap for a car nose to pierce.

Must have been the only eventful thing that has happened in the FI season

Good post.

If I may add; the barriers. They are designed to be strong but also flexible enough to soften impact.

Grosjean owes his life to years and years of improvements all coming to gather. Mind blowing.

Off the top of my head:

Halo - The T shaped cockpit protection that prevents tyres and large debris entering the cockpit

HaNS - Prevents sever whiplash due to extreme deceleration.

Safety and Medical car following the field on the first lap.

Cockpit integrity requirements and improvements - The rest of the car can be ripped away but the cockpit it protected.

Fire proofing/resistance of gloves, overalls and helmet.

Training and formal qualifications of marshalls

Placement of marshalls

Race Control being manned by ex drivers.

A Driver being a lead in safety briefs

Re: Unbelievable crash
Not really into F1 these days guys so genuine question. What are the safety features these days that thankfully allow someone to be able to walk away from that?

Moncurs Putting Iron 11:16 Mon Nov 30
Re: Unbelievable crash
Time to retire and spend time with the family Mr Grosjean.

Not a miracle just every single safety feature and process of the last 20 years coming together in one incident to allow him to walk away.

A 70s style accident which would have resulted in certain death and the guy walks away like it was a tap in town.

Re: Unbelievable crash
I have just seen it for the first time and it is staggering. How the hell he wasn't killed by the explosion I don't know!??! Let alone the car being split in two.

Lucky, lucky man.

Piss poor driving. His seat for the last few seasons has been in doubt so he is pushing too hard. Good to see him walk away from
